The Challenge

My friend Tony came to me with an idea for a project that was deeply personal to him. We’d worked together on other shorts and projects, and he wanted his next short to be a semi-autobiographical dramedy about growing up as a Filipino American. Tony’s a talented director and a close friend, so I was honored to help him tell his story.

The primary challenge for me was in figuring out how to write about someone else’s lived experience in a way that honored the issues he wanted to touch on, without reducing them to stereotypes or making overgeneralizations. I did a lot of research and read essays written by Filipino Americans, and found similarities and differences in what Tony described to me about his own upbringing and feelings.

I wanted to make sure that multiple points of view were covered to help make the film feel less like “this is what it means to be FilAm” and more like “this is one interpretation of many.” This is where the main character’s sister, mother, and best friend come in; they all have different experiences of what being Filipino-American means, and how to express those experiences. In the end, JP (our hero) has to decide for himself which parts of his identity he wants to express and how.

I created the characters and plot based on my research and my interviews with Tony, then had him hone it and fill in the personal touches that make the dialogue and characters feel authentic. Since most of our cast was Filipino, it was incredibly helpful to have their feedback on the script and adjust things to align with their own experiences too.

The Result

This was an incredibly collaborative and fun experience and the feedback on the project has been humbling.

We did a crowdfunding campaign that raised almost $20,000 to make the film happen. We also got great support from local Filipino groups like One Down Media, SIPA, and other local businesses and members of the community.

FilAm is currently running the fetival circuit, after which we’ll release the finished film online for everyone to see. I was honored to be trusted as a collaborator on this project, and I’m proud of the work the entire team did to make the film happen.
