Hello,

My name is Micah McFarland

I’m an Emmy-winning Writer & Narrative Designer

based in Los Angeles.

My Work

Stellaris: Intergalactic Sports

Narrative Mod

See on Steam Workshop

A popular narrative mod featuring emergent storytelling with a sports flavor, for this project I dug into an existing game engine to solve the puzzle of how to create my own narrative content for a game I love.

Using conditionals and built-in functions, I created multiple compelling storylines with randomized outcomes that evolve based on which events the player encounters.

Time To Die

Narrative Game

Play on itch.io

This solo project was an exercise in creating a game where the player has complete freedom over how the narrative evolves and concludes. My intent was to craft three compelling options that would divide players equally, and much to my delight the final outcomes accomplished exactly that.

Artificial

Interactive Series

See on Twitch

I wrote for two seasons of this award-winning series. We used groundbreaking interactivity for a narrative show, including dialogue nodes, multiple versions of scenes, audience-created characters, and live-responsive writing. This was an incredibly challenging and fun ride that found a passionate audience and critical recognition.

FilAm

Short Film

Watch the trailer

I wrote this short film as a collaboration with the director to help him tell a deeply personal and timely story. We raised almost $20,000 on indiegogo to make this film, which is currently running the festival circuit.

Memory Chain

Environmental Puzzle Game (4pgs)

A short game where the narrative is progressed by interacting with the objects strewn around an old man’s home. If you link two objects together, the man will unlock a core memory from his life. As you progress through the “seasons” of his life, the objects around him (and his memories of them) will change.

Take a look at the dialogue spreadsheet that shows every line of dialogue and its context within the game.
